While you can't mend a split end, you can prevent them from happening and stop your existing split ends from getting worse. keep scrolling to find out what exactly a split end is, what the causes are and how to give them some much-needed TLC.
What are Split Ends?
Split ends are as they sound, it's where the end of your hair splits. This occurs, more often than not, in long hair that has been damaged by excess heat styling or colour processing.
What Causes Split Ends?
There are a few different things that can cause your strands to split. Overzealous brushing, heat styling without a heat protector, overprocessing the hair with colour and not nourishing and hydrating your mid-lengths and ends enough.
When you're brushing your hair, if it's tangled, be sure to start from the ends and detangle those, before placing the brush slightly higher up and working the brush through to the ends. Repeat all the way up to the roots, until your brush glides through the hair from roots to ends.
How to Treat Split Ends?
As we mentioned, you can't repair split ends but you can prevent them from occurring and stop them from getting worse. The trouble with split ends is that if you leave them, the split will keep working its way up the shaft of your hair and then you will have to have a full-on haircut, not just a trim.
Besides gentle detangling, there are some products you should have in your kit if you want to swerve split ends. Keep scrolling to stock up on a split end-preventing stash...
