Yes, You Should Apply SPF Every Day. Here's How...

It might seem a bit much to apply SPF every day, especially in a country where it feels like it's cloudy and raining all the time. But, you see, the sun emits two types of UV rays: UVB rays are the ones that can cause your skin to burn when it's sunny and cloud does a pretty good job of blocking UVB rays. But then there are UVA rays, these are strong enough to penetrate cloud and glass, which means as long as it's light enough to see things around you then it's light enough for UVA rays to reach your skin.
UVA = the Ageing rays. UVB = the Burning rays.
UVA rays can cause premature skin wrinkling and also pigmentation, so it's well worth factoring a broad-spectrum (meaning one that protects from both types of UV rays) into your morning skincare routine.
Now, there are two main SPF concerns we hear from TBE customers time and again. Firstly, they are worried that applying SPF daily will clog pores and cause spots. Secondly, that SPF will interfere with the texture and longevity of the foundation they apply.
To avoid breakouts and to prevent your protection interfering with your makeup, you should look to an SPF that is designed for everyday use, rather that the heavier sunscreens you might take on holiday. Look to a face cream that contains SPF or lightweight sun drops, with a serum consistency, that will sink into skin or can be mixed in with your everyday face cream. Also, be cautious not to use an SPF containing mineral oils as these can clog pores and lead to blemishes.
And it's highly likely you saw Gwyneth Paltrow's "highlighter-style" approach to SPF application, but according to Harvard research you should be applying two finger's worth of sun protection to your face and neck.
SPF for Blemish-Prone Complexions
Try the Barbara Strum Sun Drops SPF 50, €125, as they give a high level of protection but won't block pores. You can layer the Sun Drops under moisturiser or mix in with your regular face cream. However, it's worth noting if you mix the drops it reduces the protection level so, if you have time or it's a very sunny day, the layering technique is best.
SPF for Normal to Dry Complexions
Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Day Cream SPF30, €94, is packed with nourishing oils that will hydrate and nurture normal to dry skins.
If you let both sink in then neither should interfere with your foundation. In fact, the Josh Rosebrook oil-rich cream could give your full-coverage foundation a pretty glow.
