Silicones Are Totally Safe for Skin and Hair - Here's Why
Silicones have had a bad rap in recent years for not being 'clean' or 'safe' when, in fact, they are one of the most inert, non-reactive ingredients. Science-backed, they actually protect sensitive skin against allergens, they are hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic (which means they won't clog pores).
Silicones in Haircare, Skincare & Makeup
There are various types of silicones that are used in beauty products for different reasons. In haircare (which is where they get a lot of negative attention) silicones detangle, add shine, prevent damage and protect your strands. They create a waterproof coating on the hair, that can easily be washed away with a non-silicone shampoo and, well, the frizz-fighting, detangling benefits are impressive and worth the occasional "detox" shampoo.
When it comes to skincare silicones moisturise, offer slip, help deliver actives into the skin and make sunscreen waterproof and do not clog the skin or exacerbate acne.
As for makeup, they again offer that all-important slip and blendability. They help foundation and lipsticks last longer on the skin and help to blur lines when added to primers.
Silicones: Vegan & Sustainable
Silicones aren't animal-derived so they are kind to our furry friends and they are sustainable since they are derived from sand. When they are washed away from your skin or hair back into our waterways, they simply end up deposited back into the world as sand.
If you're happy with your non-silicone products, then that's great! But know that this is not the monster ingredient many lead you to believe. In short, silicones are totally inert, efficacious and safe.
